Bionics4Education is an innovative learning environment created by the Bionic Learning Network’s team of engineers, designers, and bioengineering experts. The team, who successfully develop bionics-inspired projects, realized that the countless prototypes and experimental models developed during the design process could be used as catalysts in inspiring and engaging learners in the subject of bionics.
Thanks to Bionics4Education, the team can preserve their working models and share the brainstorming experiences that resulted in the motivation and inspiration behind their prototype designs. These prototype designs are the focus of Bionics4Education and were adapted into a modular training program that features a unique bionics-inspired kit. With this Bionics Kit, bionics-inspired projects are completed.
The goal of Festo’s Bionics4Education is to offer a range of bionics-inspired projects and supporting content that educators can use to create a project-based learning experience for their students that emphasizes creativity, innovation, and problem solving.
Bionics4Education encourages curiosity and inspires learners to study bionics.
Bionics4Education promotes creativity and fun while learning from nature.
Bionics4Education inspires and engages learners to apply STEM concepts to design bionics-inspired projects.
Each prototype can be individually designed.
Optimal combination of digital and hands-on learning.
The Bionics4Education platform is based on an open-education approach. Teachers, after-school program directors, youth group leaders, or anyone interested in what nature has to teach us can review the content provided by Festo on the bionics4education website.
Are you an educator and want to utilize Bionics4Education in your classroom? Find our suggestions here.
Our content, which includes bionics concepts, project instructions, career exploration, resources, as well as behind-the-scenes videos featuring the Bionic Learning Network’s team of engineers and designers in action, can be incorporated into any learning environment.
This comprehensive collection of information helps guide learners through their bionics experience while encouraging them to ask the right questions and look to the correct models in our environment to understand how living things achieve specific functions.
The Bionics4Education Bionics Kit offered by Festo contains the material needed to build bionics projects. An alternative to this option is to compile the material on your own. You can even print certain components using a 3D printer and the CAD data provided on the Bionics4Education website.
Everything you need, from directions on assembling the bionic robots to discovering how nature inspires technical innovations, can be found by clicking a honeycomb. Each menu item contains different information (honeycombs):
The Bionic Robots menu provides honeycomb clusters specific to each bionic robot.
Honeycombs can be grouped together to create the desired learning experience within a given timeframe. Honeycomb clusters and the approximate completion times are identified in the Downloads section.
Bionics serves as a link between biology and technology, and the Bionics Kit is a perfect addition to any integrative STEM education program, STEM academy, or early STEM education initiative.
Together with its free online content, the Bionics Kit is a low-cost STEM teaching tool that emphasizes innovation, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity. It supports student learning, building the knowledge and skills necessary to apply toward design solutions that solve problems in science, technology, engineering, and math fields.
The Bionics Kit contains the material to build three different bionics-inspired projects:
Additional items are required, but not included with Bionics Kit:
All bionic objects are actuated by servo drives and controlled by a microcontroller. Detailed instructions allow students to create the objects and easily control them by using their smartphones, tablets, or computers.
Bionics Kit highlights:
Project Management - Tasks
Project Management - Document
Good planning leads to successful projects. The Project Management worksheets help identify tasks and milestones necessary to complete each bionic robot.
Team Building - Document
The Bionic Learning Network created a fun way to use nature to help classify team members by personality traits that are the core roles on their interdisciplinary team. The Team Building worksheet is used to track student’s selections when completing the Using Nature to Create Teams activity.
